Every year, carriers set their rates for the coming year based on cost developments, such as fuel and wage cost developments. In addition, investments are needed to make logistics more sustainable and to meet increasing demand. For example, investments are being made in new sorting centres, retail outlets and staff increases. We can imagine that you have a lot of questions about these rate changes, so we have listed the ten most frequently asked questions for you.

  1. Why are the rates being increased from 1 January 2022?
  2. Will the rates only be increased at MyParcel or also at other online shipping platforms?
  3. Will the rates only be increased at PostNL or also at other carriers?
  4. What are the most important changes?
  5. Why is the corona surcharge now becoming a transport surcharge?
  6. How is the transport surcharge calculated?
  7. Why is there a transport surcharge?
  8. Why has the calculation for volumetric surcharge been changed from /12 to /9?
  9. Why are not all shipping options available for the Netherlands also available for Belgium?
  10. Why is the manual processing surcharge to Germany and France so much higher than for other countries?

Why are the rates being increased from 1 January 2022?
Every year, carriers set their rates for the coming year based on cost developments, such as fuel and wage cost developments. In addition, investments are needed to make logistics more sustainable and to meet increasing demand. For example, investments are being made in new sorting centres, retail outlets and staff increases.

Will the rates only be increased at MyParcel or also at other online shipping platforms?
The rates will be increased at all online shipping platforms. This has to do with the annual rate increase of all carriers.

Will the rates only be increased at PostNL or also at other carriers?
The rates will be increased at all carriers. They do this based on the costs increase and the NEA index.

What are the most important changes?
For most products, including Parcel Netherlands and Letterbox Parcel, a regular rate increase applies. In addition, there are a few important changes that you should take into account:

  • EU shipments The manual processing surcharge will be increased for shipments to Germany and France. This has to do with the costs charged by PostNL’s network partners for manually processing parcels. The manual processing surcharge for Germany will be €10.00 and for France €8.00.
  • World shipments The volumetric weight calculation will be adjusted from ‘X dm3 / 12 = volumetric weight’ to ‘X dm3 / 9 = volumetric weight’.
  • Transport surcharge As of 1 January 2022, the ‘corona surcharge’ will become the ‘transport surcharge’. However, this surcharge has been reduced. If you are curious to find out what this means for you, download the handout here.
  • Sending a parcel to Belgium Sending a parcel to Belgium will be similar to sending a parcel within the Netherlands. As of 1 January 2022, a parcel to Belgium will be sent without additional shipping options as standard. You can choose from the following shipping options: Home address only (no surcharge), Signature on delivery (no surcharge) and Increased liability up to €500.00 (no surcharge).

Why is the corona surcharge now becoming a transport surcharge?
Due to the Covid pandemic, international freight traffic has become scarce. The situation has improved this year but is not yet at the old level. Carriers are still forced to use more expensive transport to certain destinations in order to continue delivering to your customers with the quality and service you are used to. The surcharge will remain in place for the time being, hence the name change. However, the transport surcharge will be reduced. You can find an overview of the rates in combination with the transport surcharge here.

How is the transport surcharge calculated?
The transport surcharge is calculated on the basis of the expected costs for the coming year.

Why is there a transport surcharge?
Due to the Covid pandemic, international freight traffic has become scarce. The situation has improved this year but is not yet at the old level. Carriers are still forced to use more expensive transport to continue delivering to your customers with the quality and service you are used to. For the time being, the surcharge will remain in place, but it will be reduced.

Why has the calculation for volumetric surcharge been changed from /12 to /9?
In order to make international transport more sustainable and efficient, the space taken up by a parcel is taken into account when sending parcels. In this way, carriers encourage products to be sent in the right packaging and with less air.

Why are not all shipping options available for the Netherlands also available for Belgium?
PostNL has been delivering in the Netherlands for years, but has only been doing distribution in Belgium for a few years. Since we have only been operating in Belgium for a relatively short time, not all shipping options are available yet. However, the services are constantly being expanded. We expect to be able to offer even more services for sending a parcel to Belgium in the coming years.

Why is the manual processing surcharge to Germany and France so much higher than for other countries?
The manual processing surcharge to Germany and France is higher because PostNL’s network partners charge higher fees for parcels that have to be processed manually. For example, because they roll off the conveyor belt or the label has been affixed in the wrong place.

In conclusion.
