How is the rate for a shipment with a destination outside of the EU calculated?
The price for a World Shipment is calculated by the base rate + energy surcharge + (volumetric weight x kilo surcharge). The kilo surcharge, depending on the volume (dm3) of the shipment, is determined based on the actual weight (in kg) or the volumetric weight. This method has been introduced to charge shipments that take up more space and/or weight during transport more than smaller and/or lighter shipments. This means that if the actual weight of a shipment is greater than the volumetric weight, the actual weight is used for calculating the kilo surcharge. If the volumetric weight is greater than the actual weight, then the volumetric weight is used. We'll explain how it works using the example below.
Example calculation for a shipment of 3 kg:
Dimensions: 40 x 30 x 60 cm
Volume: 4 x 3 x 6 dm = 72 dm3
Actual weight: 3 kg
Volumetric weight: 72 / 7.5 = 9.6 kg
The volumetric weight is calculated based on the volume (dm3) / 7.5.
In the above situation, 7.5 is the volumetric weight divisor used to calculate the kilo surcharge. The weight is always rounded up to the nearest whole kilogram. If in this case, the outcome was 9.6, it would be rounded up to 10 kg.
