Why will PostNL's volume surcharge also be applied to European shipments from 1 January 2024 onwards?

Still, too many parcels are being sent with unnecessarily large amounts of empty space. It's a shame because this results in fewer parcels being transported simultaneously.
 

For this reason, starting January 1, 2023, PostNL will also impose a volumetric surcharge on European shipments with a volume of 50 dm3 or higher. This surcharge aligns with the volumetric surcharge currently applicable to domestic shipments in the Netherlands. The surcharge is calculated based on the volume (L x W x H) of a parcel. This volumetric surcharge has already been in place for shipments within the Netherlands.
 

Initially, we chose not to pass on this surcharge to provide you with the opportunity to adjust your packaging. However, starting January 1, 2024, we will apply this surcharge. Additionally, as of January 1, 2024, the surcharge's rate will not only differ for France and Germany but also for Denmark and Sweden.
